Learning English is not about memorising grammar rules first. It is about using a few real phrases again and again until they become automatic. In this guide we cover 20 daily phrases with Hindi meanings and when to use them.

Greetings and politeness

Start every conversation with a warm greeting. "Good morning" (सुप्रभात) works until noon. "Good evening" (शुभ संध्या) is for later. "How are you?" (आप कैसे हैं?) shows you care. The easy reply is "I am fine, thank you."

Please and thank you

"Please" (कृपया) and "Thank you" (धन्यवाद) are the two most important words. Indians sometimes skip them, but in English they change the whole tone. "Could you please help me?" sounds polite. "Thanks a lot" is stronger than a plain "thanks."

At the shop or market

When you buy something, say "How much is this?" (यह कितने का है?). The shopkeeper may say "It is two hundred rupees." You can reply "Can you give a discount?" (क्या छूट देंगे?). To accept, say "Okay, I will take it."

Ordering food

"Can I get a cup of tea?" (एक कप चाय मिलेगी?). "The bill, please" (बिल दीजिए) asks for the total. These phrases work in any restaurant in India or abroad.

Travel and directions

"Where is the bus stop?" (बस स्टॉप कहाँ है?). "Take a left" (बायें लें) and "Take a right" (दायें लें) help you navigate. "Is this the train to Mumbai?" (क्या यह ट्रेन मुंबई वाली है?) saves you from wrong trains.

Small talk

Small talk builds confidence. "Nice weather today" (आज मौसम अच्छा है). "What do you do?" (आप क्या काम करते हैं?). "Where are you from?" (आप कहाँ से हैं?). These open real conversations.

Practice plan

  1. Pick 5 phrases each day.
  2. Say them aloud 10 times.
  3. Use at least one with a real person.
  4. Record yourself on the SpeakNow app.
  5. Repeat the next day with 5 new ones.

Consistency beats intensity. Twenty phrases a week becomes a hundred in a month. That is enough to handle most daily situations in English.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not translate word-by-word from Hindi. "Open the fan" is wrong; say "Turn on the fan." Learn phrases as whole units, not separate words.

Final tip

Keep a small notebook. Write each new phrase with its Hindi meaning. Review it on the bus or auto. Within 30 days you will notice real change.
