Indians often mix "since" and "for". The rule is simple once you see it.

Use "since" with a point in time

  • since Monday
  • since 2020
  • since morning
  • since I was a child

"Since" answers the question "from when?"

Use "for" with a duration

  • for two days
  • for three years
  • for an hour
  • for a long time

"For" answers "how long?"

Examples

  • I have lived here since 2021.
  • I have lived here for five years.

Both are correct but mean slightly different focus.

Quick test

If you can put a clock or date after it, use "since". If you can count the time, use "for".

Common error

Wrong: "I am waiting since two hours." Right: "I have been waiting for two hours."
