The local market is the best place to practice English. Vendors are friendly and you get instant replies. Here is a Hinglish phrase guide.
Asking prices
- "Bhaiya, ye tamatar kitne ke?" → "Brother, how much are these tomatoes?"
- "Pyaaz ka rate kya hai?" → "What is the rate of onions?"
Bargaining
- "Thoda kam karo na" → "Please reduce the price a bit."
- "Agar 100 mein doge toh leta hoon" → "If you give it for 100, I will take it."
Quantity
- "Half kilo dhaniya dena" → "Give me half a kilo of coriander."
- "Ek kilo sev dijiye" → "Please give one kilo of apples."
Common replies
Vendor: "Sa hundred rupees." You: "Okay, pack it." (ठीक है, पैक करो.)
Practice tip
Before going to the market, pick 3 phrases. Use only English with the vendor that day. Even if they reply in Hindi, your practice still counts.
Why this works
Market talk is repetitive. The same 20 sentences cover most visits. Once automatic, your confidence grows for bigger conversations.
